Window Replacement Options
You have two choices for vinyl replacement windows: full-frame windows and insert windows.
Full-Frame Replacement Windows
-
Replace the entire existing window down to the house frame
-
Necessary when existing window frames are old and deteriorating
-
More advanced project because you have to remove interior and exterior trims and sometimes the siding
Insert or Pocket Replacement Windows
-
Replace only the existing sashes with smaller windows that fit inside the existing frames
-
Existing frames must be in good condition
-
More DIY-friendly than full-frame replacements because your current trims and siding aren't removed
This project gives you step-by-step instructions for how to replace a window insert or pocket window from the exterior of a house. Some replacement windows can be installed from the interior or exterior. Check the manufacturer's documentation to get specific instructions for your windows.
The Vinyl Advantage
Vinyl windows are high quality, energy efficient and budget friendly. Because they never need painting or refinishing, they are low maintenance and easy to care for. The vinyl formula allows for excellent weathering and color retention. With fully-welded sashes and frames, vinyl windows are strong and durable, too. The multi-chambered frames in vinyl windows help reduce thermal transfer and provide additional support to the window

CREATING CORNER WINDOWS
A corner window is a single unit comprised of two or more sashes that meet at a corner and span both sides of a building. A corner window requires a special framing method in order to create a rough opening with no corner support.
Eliminating large support structures opens up the entire corner to sweeping panoramic views with minimal visual disruptions and captures light from multiple directions. Corner windows create a clean and modern aesthetic, but do not operate.
When it comes to corner windows, the product of two windows combined is clearly greater than the sum of its parts. Corner windows enable sweeping views, increase visual interest, and add a modern touch that can both enhance a contemporary design and update a traditional home without jarring the overall aesthetic.
As the projects in our slideshow illustrate, corner windows can be incorporated into styles ranging from farmhouse to sleek contemporary, on interiors or exteriors, and in any climate—in fact, what better way to encourage an indoor/outdoor feel even when the temperature drops?

Traditionally windows are openings in a single wall that frame a view and bring in light from one direction. Corner windows are atypical and therefore something special; they create expansive views and bring in more light than typical punched openings. When a window eschews a corner support or frame the effect is even more dramatic, as the following photos attest.
Historically these apertures wrapping exterior corners trace themselves to Art Deco and early International Style architecture, be it houses, apartment buildings or offices. For an early example of a frameless corner one should look to Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Fallingwater from 1936. Those corner windows create panoramic views and reinforce the dramatic cantilevers that made the lack of corner supports possible. Wright’s influence — as well as that of the early Modern architects — upon some of the following is undeniable.
